Delicate Tomboy is more than just the name of a clothing company. In college, where I studied graphic design, typography and fashion history, a professor gave me the nickname “Delicate Tomboy.” The phrase seemed to describe my personality to a tee (no pun intended), and the name stuck. When I started making tee shirts, I knew Delicate Tomboy was the only option for the name of my label.
Besides providing our name, college was also the place where I made my first tee. It all started with a little help from my friends. I jotted down some of the cute, quirky and nonsensical things they said (“bananas, baby powder and water,” “I go to the gym to get away from the drama”, and “nothing overpowers an onion” were just a few), and then ironed those phrases onto blank tees that I had hand-dyed pink, of course! From the start, my tees were the embodiment of so many things I have always loved to do - making clothes, sewing, typography, fabric dying, thrift-store shopping and being funny.
Before long, my love of tee shirts took over, and after I broke up with a boyfriend, I realized I had a great outlet to vent. My natural reaction was to let the whole world know the truth, so I created a shirt to share the lesson I had learned. I took a fresh new tee and ironed on these 30 letters: “never date a guy who has a twin sister.”
I wore the shirt all over New York City, and although most people didn't get it, almost everyone had a reaction. I knew I was on to something! Delicate Tomboy tees were born!
Our first line features shirts with dozens of other “never date a guy who” lessons. (“Never date a guy who has a twin sister” wasn't the only thing I had learned!) Every girl has advice worth sharing on the subjects of guys and dating, so I had plenty of help from friends, customers and the way-too-many guys who, um, inspire us to come up with our growing list of dating no-no's! Now, Delicate Tomboy introduces DT Originals by Emmy T, a line of tees, onesies and pants, for baby boys and girls up to 18 months old with the same clever design and eye-catching messages (minus the dating advice!).
